FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is The Gravelpackers?
The Gravelpackers is a collaborative project between Nomadikt and Cycling Jordan. We organise international gravel-bikepacking events, offering adventurous routes across remote and beautiful landscapes while supporting local communities.
What kind of trips do you offer?
We offer unsupported but coordinated gravel-bikepacking events. Riders travel independently on the bike, following our mapped routes, while we coordinate logistics, accommodation and safety support in the background. Our routes focus on secondary roads, historic villages and natural landscapes, giving a mix of adventure, culture and nature far from standard tourist paths.
Is the trip a guided tour?
No. The Gravelpackers events are not guided tours. They follow an “unsupported but coordinated” concept: you ride independently, choose your own pace and daily strategy, while we provide the logistical framework and safety coordination behind the scenes.
Is there support on the route?
Yes. While you ride on your own, our team manages key logistics such as accommodation coordination, route planning support, emergency coordination and general communication so the experience remains possible, safe and enjoyable.
Do I need previous bikepacking experience to join?
Previous bikepacking or long-distance cycling experience is very helpful. Our events cross remote areas with varied terrain and sometimes tough conditions. If you’re new to bikepacking, we recommend preparing with shorter gravel trips and being comfortable with long days in the saddle.
What about accommodation and meals?
We rely on local, family-run accommodations (tea houses, guesthouses, small inns) along the route. Where specified in the program, breakfast and dinner are included and designed to offer authentic local food while supporting the local economy.
What is “unsupported but coordinated”?
“Unsupported but coordinated” means you are self-reliant on the bike: no guides, no luggage transfer, and you manage your own effort, pacing and stops. At the same time, we coordinate routes, accommodation options, checkpoints and emergency support so the event has structure, safety and flow.
What type of bike do I need?
A gravel bike or hardtail mountain bike is recommended. Your bike should be in excellent mechanical condition, as the terrain includes gravel, dirt, tarmac and occasionally rocky sections.
Do I need to carry all my gear?
Yes. Gravelpackers events are self-supported. You carry your own equipment: bags, clothing, tools, spares and personal items. This keeps the experience authentic, personal and fully self-reliant.
Are the events guided?
No. There is no guide riding in front of the group. You navigate with GPX files, choose your own rhythm, and decide how you manage each stage. Our role is organisation and coordination, not guiding on the bike.
How do I navigate the route?
We provide GPX files and route information. A GPS device or a smartphone with a reliable navigation app and power management strategy is essential.
What level of fitness is required?
These are adventure-oriented routes with long climbs, mixed surfaces and changing weather. You should be in good physical condition, comfortable with several consecutive days of riding and able to handle challenging terrain and elevation.
How does accommodation work in practice?
We work with local, family-run guesthouses and tea houses along the route. You’ll know the possible overnight villages and options in advance, and you choose where to stay within that structure, depending on your pace and preferences.
What meals are included?
In general, breakfast and dinner are included at each stage as specified in the event description. Snacks, drinks and lunch during the ride are your responsibility and part of the self-supported nature of the event.
What happens in an emergency?
We have an emergency coordination system, local contacts and a communication protocol. In case of an incident, we help organise evacuation or assistance where possible. However, riders must have appropriate travel insurance that covers cycling, high-altitude (where relevant) and emergency evacuation.
Can I ride with others or must I ride solo?
You are free to ride solo or in small groups. Many riders naturally team up on the route, but there is no obligation either way.
What if I can’t finish a stage?
If you cannot complete a stage, you can stop at the nearest village or safe point. Our team will help coordinate possible options (transport, extra night, evacuation, etc.), but riders must be mentally prepared for remote, challenging environments.
How do I book my place?
Bookings are made directly through our website. A deposit is required to confirm your spot, with the remaining balance due before the event according to the payment schedule.
What is the cancellation policy?
Our cancellation and refund policy is clearly outlined during the booking process. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, interruption and delays.
Are flights and visas included?
No. International flights and visa costs are not included. Each rider is responsible for organising their travel to and from the starting and finishing locations and for meeting visa requirements.
What equipment should I bring?
After registration, we provide a recommended packing list. It typically includes bikepacking bags, repair tools, spare tubes, warm and waterproof layers, basic first aid and any specific gear required for the region (e.g. high-altitude clothing).
Is there luggage transfer between stages?
No. There is no daily luggage transfer. Riders carry all their gear on their bikes. The only vehicle transfers are those specifically mentioned in the event program (for example, transfers to the start point or return transfers at the end).
How big are the groups?
Group sizes are limited to keep the experience intimate, flexible and logistically manageable. Exact group size may vary per event, but we avoid large mass-participation formats.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Yes. Travel insurance is mandatory. It must cover cycling, medical expenses, emergency evacuation and, for some events, high-altitude activity.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Weather is part of the adventure. If conditions become unsafe, we may adjust routes, schedules or stages. Our coordination team monitors conditions and communicates any necessary changes for safety.
Can beginners join?
Motivated beginners with strong fitness and some off-road experience may join, but our events are mainly designed for intermediate to advanced riders. If you’re unsure, contact us and we can help you assess if a specific event matches your level.
What makes The Gravelpackers unique?
We combine true self-reliance on the bike with professional coordination off the bike. You get the freedom, authenticity and challenge of unsupported bikepacking, with just enough structure to keep the experience safe, possible and well-organised.
